“President Lula gave me guarantees that Brazil is strongly behind Guyana,” said Irfaan Ali
The President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, said on Wednesday (Dec 6, 2023) that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) assured that Brazil would not accept any “imprudent behavior” da Venezuela na disputa por Essequibo
“President Lula gave me assurances that Brazil is strongly behind Guyana. And that he would not support any reckless behavior by Venezuela”, said Ali in an interview with CNN International.
The statement deals with the referendum held on Sunday (Dec 3) by the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro. Voters were asked about the annexation of the Essequibo region, which corresponds to 74% of Guyanese territory, to Venezuela. According to the Venezuelan electoral authority, more than 95% voted for the creation of the State of Essequibo.
In the interview, Ali praised the sending of a Brazilian team to Venezuela to talk to Maduro about the situation and mentioned the sending of more Brazilian troops to the border.
The Guyanese leader also stated that his country’s Defense has observed “an increase in Venezuelan military presence on the border” with Guyana.
There he highlighted the presentation of a bill by Maduro, on Tuesday (Dec 5), which complies with the result of the referendum. He also mentioned that the Venezuelan president “gave an ultimatum to the investor, which includes US and Chinese investors, to exit the region within 3 months”. And he said he expected the release of strong statements against the annexation of his territory in the next 24 hours.
In the Guyanese president’s assessment, Maduro is trying to divert attention from the presidential elections.

According to the country’s electoral authority, more than 95% of people approved the 5 referendum questions for the creation of the State of Essequibo. The measure, of a consultative nature, was announced by Maduro on November 10.
