Pope Francis mentioned for the first time accusations that there was a “genocide” in the Gaza Strip and called for an investigation into the matter, in a book to be published and excerpts from which were released this Sunday (17).

“According to some experts, what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of a genocide. We must investigate carefully to determine whether this fits the technical definition formulated by jurists and international organizations”, said the pope in excerpts from the book published by the Italian newspaper “La Stampa”.

The statement was released on the same day that an Israeli attack on a building in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, killed Mohammad Afif, Hezbollah’s media chief, according to the Reuters news agency.

According to the Italian newspaper, the book with Pope Francis’ statements should be published soon with the title “Hope never disappoints”, which will be released on Tuesday (19) in Italy, Spain and South America, and that the newspapers La Stampa and El País published this Sunday.

The pope frequently recalls the extermination of Jews during World War II, the “genocide” of Armenians under the Ottoman Empire, Tutsis in Rwanda and Christians in the Middle East.

Francis also mourns the civilian victims in Gaza, but this is the first time he has publicly used the term genocide in the context of Israeli military operations in Palestinian territory.
