An oil tanker exploded this Sunday in the Strait of Hormuz after ignoring the Iranian government’s recommendations on the shipping route. According to the Iranian agency Tasnimthe vessel maintained the planned path until it hit a naval mine. So far, there is no information about the ownership of the ship.
The sea route remains closed since the US broke the memorandum of understanding and resumed attacks on the Persian country, which has responded to the offensive. One of the actions was the closure of the maritime channel until negotiations resume.
The incident occurred after two nights without US bombings against Iran, ending a streak of 13 consecutive days of attacks. The pause was also accompanied by the Iranian government. “Since our strategy has essentially been one of retaliation, we have also suspended our operations,” said Iranian Army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia. He added that if attacks resume, the conflict could expand geographically.
The expectation is that the suspension of the attacks will open space for the resumption of dialogue, which, since April, has been going back and forth. Efforts by allied countries and even the signing of a document that paves the way for agreements to end the conflict have already been made with the intention of aligning a ceasefire between the two countries. However, what was seen in the following months was the continuation of attacks, mainly aerial ones, by the United States, in addition to Israel’s military actions in Lebanon. In response, Iran carried out attacks against US military bases in the Middle East.
