In a record from the North American space agency, it is possible to see the expansion of rivers towards the center of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul

NASA published this Thursday (May 9, 2024) a satellite image of the center of Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul, after the capital of Rio Grande do Sul was flooded with heavy rains in the state.

In the record, it is possible to see water leaking from the banks of the Jacuí River and invading highways close to Arena Grêmio, the historic center and Salgado Filho Airport, closed until May 30.

According to the latest report from Rio Grande do Sul’s Civil Defense, the rains have already left 107 people dead and 136 people missing. The storms have hit 425 of the 497 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul since April 28 and affected more than 1.4 million people.

In Porto Alegre, floods took over the historic center and different neighborhoods of the city. Mayor Sebastião Melo (MDB) asked residents to leave the affected areas after Lake Guaíba reached a historic mark and exceeded 5 meters.

Internacional’s Beira-Rio stadium and Arena Grêmio were completely flooded. The last one was used to gather homeless people in the city, but had to be evacuated with the scene. At least 200 people were relocated.
