Income tax exemption in Argentina

On Monday (September 11, 2023), Argentina’s economy minister, Sergio Massa, announced the increase in the income tax exemption floor to 1.7 million pesos, around R$23,971, at the current rate.

With the change, only 90,000 people across the country will have to pay the tax, less than 1% of the total number of registered workers. According to the government, the measure will have a fiscal cost of around US$1 billion per year.

FLOOD IN LIBYA

Also on Monday, a storm hit Libya. The city of Derna was the most affected. As of Thursday (September 14), at least 11,300 people had died from the damage caused by Storm Daniel. Rains also hit Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria over the weekend, leaving 27 people dead in the region. Meteorologists expect rain to reach Egypt in the coming days.

IMPEACHMENT CONTRA JOE BIDEN

On Tuesday (September 12), the President of the United States House, Kevin McCarthy, said that he is directing a committee to open an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. The reason would be the Democrat’s family business.

Kevin McCarthy said the House oversight committee’s investigation found a “culture of corruption” in the Biden family. The collegiate analyzed the tax evasion accusations against Hunter Biden, Biden’s son, before the president’s inauguration.

For an impeachment process to be opened in the North American Chamber, the majority of the 435 congressmen must be in favor – that is, 218 deputies. McCarthy’s Republican party controls 222 seats in the Lower House.

Apple launches iPhone 15

On Tuesday, Apple launched the new iPhone 15. The device will be sold from US$799 in the United States and R$7,299 in Brazil.

At the launch event, the big tech announced that 3 other models will be available: iPhone 15 plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple also announced two new Apple Watch updates: Apple Watch series 9 and Apple Watch ultra 2.

CIA paid to hide the origin of covid

The US House special subcommittee on the coronavirus pandemic published a report on Tuesday stating that the CIA, the United States’ central intelligence agency, offered money so that investigators would not disclose that the Covid-19 virus originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China.

The company’s former director of operations, Andrew Makridis, was summoned by the group to provide clarification on the matter on September 26th.

Inflation in Argentina and the United States

On Wednesday (September 13), Argentina’s annual inflation increased to 124.4% in August. The increase was 11 percentage points compared to the 113.4% recorded in July. The monthly rate in August was 12.4%, the highest in 21 years.

On the same day, the United States also announced that the country’s annual inflation rose 0.5 percentage points, rising from 3.2% in July to 3.7% in August. US monthly inflation was 0.6% in August.

Brazilian fugitive in the USA is arrested

Also on Wednesday, police in the state of Pennsylvania, in the United States, arrested Brazilian Danilo Cavalcante, who had been on the run since August 31st. He was sentenced to life in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend, Débora Evangelista Brandão, with 38 stab wounds in April 2021.

On August 31, he escaped from the prison in Chester County, Pennsylvania, after climbing the penitentiary wall. The search operation lasted 14 days and involved around 500 police officers.

Danilo Cavalcante was interrogated by police in Avondale County, Pennsylvania and transferred to a prison in the region.
