President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was honored, this Thursday (8), by diplomatic representations from Arab and Islamic countries at the Palestine Embassy, in Brasília. On the occasion, the president planted a tree outside the building, with the help of ambassador Ibrahim Alzeben.
“Today, at the Palestinian Embassy, I planted an olive tree in the name of peace and hope for the Palestinian people and the entire world,” declared Lula, via social media. “You are planting hope for the Palestinian people and for the world, God willing,” said Alzeben at the time.
The Brazilian government has a historic position in defense of the Palestinian State. Under Lula, since the beginning of Israel’s attacks on the Palestinian people, the government has been working to end the conflict. He tried to approve a resolution at the UN and in January, Lula decided to support the action filed by South Africa against the State of Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which denounces the genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Lula and Brazilian diplomacy have also been in dialogue with international leaders and organizations, in addition to sending humanitarian aid and rescuing Brazilians, their families and some foreigners from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

The most recent repatriation also took place this Thursday (8). This is a mother and her three minor children, one of whom was born after the last repatriation flight from that region, on 23/12, which is why the family had not yet been able to be brought.
According to Itamaraty, since October 10, 2023, 1,560 Brazilians and close family members who were in Israel or Palestine and who expressed their intention to leave were removed from the region by the Brazilian government.
Also attending the dinner were First Lady Janja da Silva, Vice President and Minister of Industry and Commerce, Geraldo Alckmin, Ministers Fernando Haddad (Finance), Ricardo Lewandowski (Justice), Paulo Pimenta (Secretary of Communications) and Mauro Vieira (Foreign Affairs) and special advisor Celso Amorim.
