Conference will be in November; president said he is “pleading” for COP30 to be held in the state of Amazonas
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) confirmed this Saturday (May 6, 2023) that he will travel to the United Arab Emirates to participate in COP28 (United Nations Conference on Climate Change 2023), to be held on November 30 on the 12th of December.
The president stated that he intends to go to the conference to collect from rich countries the US$ 100 billion fund –which, according to him, has been promised since COP15– aimed at the preservation of the Amazon. “Since COP15, rich countries have pledged money, pledged funds. And that $100 billion fund never shows up.”he stated.
To journalists, Lula said he was “pleading” that COP30 be in Brazil, in the “State of the Amazon” – in April, he declared that the unit of the Federation would be Pará. The statement was made after the coronation ceremony of King Charles III in London. The United Kingdom is the 8th country to be visited by Lula since the beginning of his 3rd term.
On Friday (May 5), Planalto confirmed the president’s trip to Japan for the G7 summit meeting on May 20 and 21.
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, announced on Friday (May 5) that the country will invest in the Amazon Fund. “I want to announce on this occasion that we are going to invest in the Amazon Fund and this is all because of your work, your fight, and we pay this homage”, said Sunak to Lula.
“He [Sunak] assumed the responsibility of also contributing to the Amazon Fund. We, who had lost everything, we, who had lost the fund in Norway and Germany because the president did not apply it, we are not only applying it, but now we have received another notice from Biden, who will give 500 thousand reais. Now, England has not said how much it will give, but I hope it will not be less than the United States.”declared the PT.
The president said that he intends to take the conversation about the fund to the G7, the G20 and even to the Brics – an organization formed by the developing countries Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
