Governor also invited the pontiff to visit Rio Grande do Sul in 2026 to celebrate 400 years of the Jesuit missions
The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), presented Pope Francis, on Wednesday (April 17, 2024), with shirts from Grêmio, Internacional and Brasil de Pelotas, the state’s football teams. He also gave Francisco a sculpture from the ruins of São Miguel das Missões, a city in RS. The gifts were handed over during the governor’s visit to the Vatican.
“Which shirt did the Pope bless? The 1st photo is merely illustrative and has no influence on the answer, without a doubt”, said Leite when sharing images of the moment he handed the shirts to Francisco. In the first photo of the carousel of images, the pontiff has his hand on the shield of Brasil de Pelotas, the team the governor supports.
In addition to delivering the gifts, Leite also invited Francisco to visit the State in 2026 to celebrate 400 years of the Jesuit missions in Rio Grande do Sul. “It was a very gentle, very kind conversation between the Pope and us. He thanked us for the gifts and the invitation and also remembered that he had been to the city of Pelotas many times, where an uncle of his lived.”declared the governor.
