On Friday (2), the Democratic Party confirmed Kamala Harris as its candidate for the US presidential elections, where she will face Donald Trump. The current vice president obtained the majority of votes from delegates in the online vote, which began on Thursday (1/8), according to information from the party spokesperson. The elections are scheduled for November 5.
After the announcement, Kamala thanked on her X profile: “I am honored to be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States. I will officially accept the nomination next week. This campaign is about people coming together, driven by love of country, to fight for the best that we can be.”
Before the announcement, Kamala’s campaign team revealed that it raised $310 million in July, about R$1.76 billion, double the amount raised by Donald Trump in the same period. “Our campaign had the best fundraising month in history,” Kamala shared, thanking donors for their support.
Even with the necessary votes already reached, online voting continues until Monday (5). The official nomination must be finalized by Wednesday (7) before the party’s convention in Chicago, which takes place from August 19 to 22. The deadline is tight, but necessary for the candidates’ names to appear on the ballots in Ohio, as explained by the Democrats.
Now, it remains to choose who will be Kamala’s running mate. The names of four governors and one senator are being considered, but she has not yet decided, according to her team. The announcement is expected to happen in the next few days.
