The right-wing Giorgia Meloni is from the Brothers of Italy coalition; voting will be from June 6th to 9th

The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, announced this Sunday (April 28, 2024) that she will contest the elections for the European Parliament for the right-wing Brothers of Italy party. Voting is scheduled to take place from June 6 to 9, 2024.

“We want to do in Europe exactly what we did in Italy on September 25, 2022: create a majority that brings together the center-right forces and, finally, send the left into opposition”, stated Meloni during the party conference in Pescara.

In the last European elections, the party won 6 seats in the European Parliament.

The bloc’s rules state that the winning candidate who already holds a ministerial position must immediately resign from the bloc’s Parliament. Meloni’s candidacy aims to boost his party.

In addition to Meloni, they also announced candidacy for the leader of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, and Antonio Tajani, head of the centrist Forza Italia party.
