The Provisional Electoral Council of Haiti announced this Monday (27) a change in the official electoral calendar, defining December 13th as the date for the first round of the presidential elections. The rescheduling also includes legislative elections and the referendum to ratify constitutional reforms, processes initially scheduled for August 30.
Electoral authorities have also established that the second round of presidential elections and elections for local governments will be held on February 21, 2027. The publication of the final results, referring to territorial communities, is scheduled for March 12 of the same year, thus extending the institutional transition phase in the Caribbean country.
The electoral body emphasized that holding the vote will depend on the establishment of minimum public security conditions throughout the country. He also highlighted the urgent need for financing to organize the electoral process in a country plagued by social instability.
Haiti is experiencing a prolonged institutional vacuum after a decade without elections to renew its representatives in public office. Various social organizations and popular movements demand the return of sovereignty to the people through the restoration of peace and the end of foreign interference.
Widespread violence in large areas of the country represents the main challenge to guaranteeing electoral participation at the polls. Community groups indicate that restoring peace and strengthening basic services are essential to achieving transparent democratic participation.
The new electoral calendar seeks to offer a clear path towards democratic renewal and the restoration of constitutional order in the sister republic.
