Minister will take advantage of the spring meeting of the IMF and the World Bank, in addition to the G20 Financial Track, to advance issues such as international taxation
The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddadwill defend the promotion of economic reforms during the spring meeting do FMI (International Monetary Fund) and the world Bank. The agenda also includes the 2nd meeting of the G20 Financial Track, chaired by Brazil in 2024.
Haddad’s agenda in Washington DC (USA) seeks to advance issues such as international taxation, new sustainable finance agendas and multilateral banking reforms. At the same time, it wants to show that these proposals led by Brazil have the support of other countries.
The Treasury holder travels from São Paulo to the United States on Monday night (April 15, 2024) and will stay in the North American capital until Friday (April 19). Meetings include bilateral meetings and discussion tables.
Haddad’s agenda begins at the Wilson Center, on Tuesday afternoon (April 16), to open an event organized by the Secretariat of International Finance Affairs and the Climate and Society Institute on sustainable finance. The meeting will be attended by the Brazilian ambassador to the USA, Maria Viotti, and Mark Carney, general coordinator of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero.
Afterwards, there will be a dialogue with the president of the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank), Ilan Goldfajn, at American Chamber of Commerce. The theme is “Investing in Latin America: economic reforms in Brazil”.
The agenda on Wednesday (17 April) will feature side events related to the G20. In the morning, at the World Bank headquarters, Haddad participates in a panel on the “Hunger Task Force”, with representatives from the USA, African Union, Norway, South Africa and the president of the IDB.
Afterwards, the Brazilian minister will be at the IMF headquarters at an event on international taxation, led by the Brazilian Treasury and the French Ministry of Economy. A IMF director general, Kristalina Georgieva, and French minister Bruno Le Maire participate.
It will also discuss the debt situation of emerging countries in Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable (Global Roundtable on Sovereign Debt). In the afternoon, there will be meetings organized by Brazilian representatives at the World Bank and the IMF to share each country’s concerns.
A G20 dinner that focuses on sustainable finance concludes the day. Esther Duflo, winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2019, will give a presentation.
On Thursday (18 April), there will be the 2nd ministerial meeting of the G20, which will deal with multilateral banks. Haddad will also give an interview to journalists within the Finance Track, at the IMF headquarters.
The Finance Minister will also have a bilateral meeting with the Chinese Finance Minister, Lan Foan, and will be on an agenda with the IMF’s chief economist, Gita Gopinath, on risks and warnings for the global economy.
On Friday (April 19), there will be restricted meetings and a plenary session involving the International Monetary and Financial Committee. Haddad will also have a bilateral meeting with Paolo Gentiloni, commissioner of European Union for economic matters, and participates in plenary session of the World Bank Development Committee.
At night, return from Washington DC to São Paulo. Other Finance Secretaries will also be on parallel agendas in the US capital: Tatiana Rosito (International Affairs), Guilherme Mello (Economic Policy) and Marcos Barbosa Pinto (Economic Reforms), who were mobilized for financial engagement.
