PT President claims that businessman “openly attacked Brazilian sovereignty in favor of his interests”

The president of the PT (Workers’ Party), deputy Gleisi Hoffmann (PR), stated this Saturday (20.Apr.2024) “fully support” that businessman Elon Musk compensates Brazil with R$1 billion “for collective moral damage and social damage caused” to the country. The punishment was requested by the DPU (Federal Public Defender’s Office) to the Federal Court on Friday (April 19).

“Elon Musk openly attacked Brazilian sovereignty in favor of his interests and the extreme right. Brazil respects everyone, but will not lower its head to anyone. Elon must answer for his actions!”said the deputy in a publication on X (formerly Twitter).

In the request, the DPU states that Musk’s actions constitute an improper use of digital platforms for illicit purposes, representing “a serious affront to the democratic rule of law”.

According to the Ombudsman’s Office, Brazil is in “delicate moment” when recovering from the attempted coup by sectors of the “extreme right”. Therefore, the billionaire’s statements on the social network in recent weeks would have directly challenged authorities and incited the “non-compliance with court decisions”.

Musk came into conflict with the minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), Alexandre de Moraes, after expressing criticism of the judge. In posts published at the beginning of this month, the businessman called the magistrate a “they pull”, “totalitarian” e “draconiano”. He also threatened to reactivate accounts banned by court order and suspend restrictions imposed on the social network.

In response, Moraes ordered the inclusion of the billionaire in the digital militia investigation and prohibited X from disobeying court orders to remove user accounts or send data about those being investigated.
