Dries van Agt had a brain hemorrhage in 2019; procedure was carried out in his hometown, in the east of the country

Former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt and his wife, Eugenie, died on February 5 after double euthanasia. According to the The Rights Forum, a pro-Palestinian foundation he founded in 2009, the couple died hand in hand in a hospital in Nijmegen, in the east of the country, van Agt’s hometown. The funeral was closed. Both were 93 years old.

The politician, who led the country from 1977 to 1982, had a brain hemorrhage in 2019. Although he recovered, he had permanent sequelae. According to the statement, Eugenie did not want to continue living without her husband, and that is why she opted for the procedure.

Assisted suicide has been occurring in the Netherlands since 2002, as well as in other European countries such as Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Spain. However, it can only be carried out if the patient is in suffering, with no prospect of improvement and has a desire to die certified and authorized by at least 2 doctors. The country also allows couples to perform double euthanasia.

In Latin America, the procedure is decriminalized in Ecuador, Colombia and Cuba. In Brazil, it is considered a crime and, if carried out, those involved could be charged with homicide.
