Russian President Vladimir Putin met this Friday (11) with former Brazilian president and head of the New Development Bank (NBD), Dilma Rousseff, in New Delhi, on the sidelines of the Brics Summit.
According to a statement released by the Kremlin press service, the Russian leader praised Dilma Rousseff’s work at the head of the NBD, known as the Brics Bank, and recalled the recent meeting held in Moscow to discuss Russian cooperation in the bank.
“The bank is working energetically, making a significant contribution to the development of the organization and expanding its activities in key areas. We are very pleased with the creation of such an instrument,” Putin said.
Vladimir Putin defended the inclusion of “the largest possible number of participants” to expand the contribution to the functioning of the institution, so that “its programs are more comprehensive, covering more economic sectors in the Brics countries”.
The Russian president also made reference to Russian proposals regarding the creation of new platforms, including “investment platforms and electronic platforms, to expand the bank’s capabilities.”
“I would like to thank our collaboration and express my hope that not only will all our agreements be implemented, but that we, working with our partners in the bank’s member countries, will find new tools to improve the performance of this very important financial instrument”, he added.
The former Brazilian president noted that Russia’s participation in the NDB is “extremely important for strengthening the Global South, as well as for the entire BRICS organization”.
“I believe that the projects we adopt within the bank will benefit all partner countries, as well as Russia and all other members,” said Rousseff.
The former Brazilian president also said she was “optimistic” about the future. According to information from the Kremlin press service, which released Dilma’s statements translated into Russian, the NDB took measures to correct an “injustice” with Russia, referring to the suspension of new operations and financing aimed at Russia in 2022, shortly after the start of the war in Ukraine.
“I am very optimistic about the future, because we have taken some measures to deal with the difficulties and the deep injustice that the bank committed against the Russian Federation. Because the Russian Federation has always played a decisive role and has always treated the bank fairly”, added Dilma, quoted by the Kremlin.
The Brics Bank was created in 2015 with the aim of financing infrastructure projects and initiatives aimed at sustainable development in emerging nations. Dilma assumed the presidency of the institution in 2023 and had her mandate renewed in 2025. At the time, Dilma’s maintenance in the position was supported by Vladimir Putin.
