Mexico sent a second shipment of humanitarian aid to Cuba this week, with almost 1,200 tons of food for the population, which is suffering from new sanctions imposed by the United States.

According to a statement from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, two ships with the products left the port of Vera Cruz on Tuesday (24). The duration of the trip is estimated at four days. On the 12th, the first two Mexican vessels arrived in Havana, carrying 814 tons of supplies and other items.

Following the most recent announcement, Cuba’s ambassador to Mexico, Eugenio Martinez, thanked the allied country for its support. “New material aid for the Cuban people, coming from the Government of Mexico, together with aid raised by civil society organizations and the Mexican people, is on its way to Cuba. We reiterate our sincere gratitude for the solidarity and aid that will reach our people.”

Even under strong pressure from Donald Trump’s government, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has skillfully helped Cuba and tried to avoid reprisals against her country.

The humanitarian crisis in Cuba has been worsening since the US, following its intervention in Venezuela and the kidnapping of Nicolas Maduro in early January, decided to suspend the supply of oil sent by Caracas to the Caribbean island. The shipment responded to around 50% of Cubans’ needs.

This Wednesday (25), the US Treasury Department announced that it would allow exports of Venezuelan oil to the Cuban private sector, both for commercial and humanitarian use. Still, the US maintained pressure on the country, stating that this oil could not be managed by the Cuban government.

The sanction is yet another way for imperialism to force the end of the socialist regime in Cuba, which since 1962 has suffered but resisted US embargoes, pressure and attacks.

The Brazilian government has been studying ways to also help Cuba, at the same time circumventing the possibility of retaliation from Trump, who has blackmail against other countries to impose his geopolitical and financial interests as one of the pillars of his mandate.

Social movements in Brazil and other countries are also organizing the sending of a convoy with humanitarian aid, which should arrive in Havana on March 21st.
