The statement came after Washington approved the sale of a weapons package worth around US$75 million to the island

Chinese government spokeswoman Zhu Fenglian warned on Wednesday (28.Feb.2023) that the United States should not sell weapons to Taiwan. The statement came after Washington approved the sale of a weapons package worth around US$75 million to the island.

Fenglian said Taiwan’s attempts to seek US support could lead the region to war and called on the US not to interfere in the region.

Taiwan is one of its most sensitive issues for China. Since the end of the 1940s, when the island began to be governed independently after a civil war, the relationship between Taipei and Beijing has gone through several moments of tension.

China considers the island to be part of its territory, in the form of a breakaway province.
