On Saturday night (13), the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a note expressing concern about the recent Iranian attack against Israel, asking all parties involved to exercise “maximum restraint” in order to avoid an “escalation” of violence. .

Earlier, Iran launched a massive attack on Israel, using more than 200 drones and missiles. The episode intensified tension in the region, with immediate repercussions on international politics and security concerns.

“Brazil calls on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and calls on the international community to mobilize efforts to avoid escalation”, says the released note. Furthermore, it was recommended that “non-essential trips be made to the conflict region” and that Brazilians “already in those countries follow the guidelines published on Brazilian embassies’ websites and social media.”

Surprise attack

Iran’s attack, which occurred around 8 pm in Brasília (2 am on Sunday in Israel), was marked by explosions heard in Jerusalem and the sound of sirens throughout the country. Israeli defense quickly activated the “Iron Dome”, an anti-missile defense system, to intercept aerial threats, minimizing damage.

This confrontation is Iran’s retaliation for the bombing of its consulate in Damascus, Syria, which occurred on April 1, and attributed to Israel, although not officially confirmed. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaled that the country is prepared for a military response, indicating that tensions could further intensify.

International monitoring

The situation is monitored with concern by the Brazilian government, according to statements by Celso Amorim, International Affairs advisor to the Presidency, to CNN. President Lula (PT) and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, also discussed the situation.

It is worth mentioning that diplomatic relations between Brazil and Israel have been strained since February, after Lula compared Israel’s attacks on Gaza, ongoing since October last year, to Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime, which exterminated 6 million Jews in World War II. The president’s statement generated strong reactions, and Lula was classified as persona non-grata by the Israeli government.
