Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Lebanese counterpart, Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib, on Monday (23) that China firmly supports Lebanon in safeguarding its sovereignty and national security.

A member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Wang was present at the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) in New York, where he met with Bou Habib to provide support on the situation in the Middle East.

Wang said that no matter how the situation changes, China will continue to “stand on the side of justice and on the side of Arab brothers, including Lebanon.”

“We pay close attention to the development of the regional situation, especially the recent explosion of communications equipment in Lebanon, and firmly oppose indiscriminate attacks against civilians,” Wang said, according to the statement.

Last week, a series of coordinated communications device explosions across Lebanon killed 39 people and injured more than 4,000 people.

This Monday, the country experienced its deadliest day in almost two decades after Israel carried out air strikes against the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah in several parts of the country. More than 500 people were killed, including dozens of teenagers and children. According to CNNthe number is equivalent to about half the total number of Lebanese killed during the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006.

“Fighting violence with violence will not solve the problems in the Middle East and will only lead to an even greater humanitarian disaster,” he added.

For the Chinese diplomat, the current situation is a manifestation of the spillover effect of the conflicts in Gaza, and China calls for a “permanent ceasefire and comprehensive withdrawal of troops” and the guarantee of an effective implementation of the “solution of two states.”

Wang expressed hope that the Lebanese side will take effective measures to protect the safety of Chinese citizens in Lebanon. In turn, Bou Habib thanked China for defending Lebanon at the United Nations and other multilateral agendas.
