On Wednesday (7), the foreign ministers of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico met virtually to discuss the political crisis in Venezuela, with a focus on the presidential elections held on July 28, 2024. With the intention of contributing to dialogue and peace in the country, the second joint statement from these countries reflects a balanced and respectful approach towards Venezuelan sovereignty and institutions, while emphasizing the importance of transparency and dialogue.

The statement comes amid political tension in Venezuela, following the recent presidential elections that raised questions about the transparency of the electoral process by the defeated opposition. These questions have been fueled with each election by external agents, which makes mediation by these neighboring countries important for dialogue and peace.

The statement emphasizes a crucial aspect: respect for national sovereignty and Venezuelan institutions. By demanding that the National Electoral Council (CNE) present the electoral results disaggregated by polling station, the countries involved are not questioning the legitimacy of the CNE, but rather emphasizing the need for transparency that allows for a complete and fair evaluation of the electoral process. This demand is aligned with the fundamental principle of popular sovereignty, which advocates that the Venezuelan people must have full confidence in the integrity of the electoral process.

In the joint statement, the ministers expressed the need for the Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE) to present the election results disaggregated by polling station. They highlighted the importance of transparent disclosure of the results, stressing that the CNE is the body responsible for this process, in accordance with its national legislation.

The reference to the action initiated before the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) highlights the expectation that the CNE will fulfill its legal functions with maximum transparency. This point is important because it reflects a stance that respects Venezuela’s internal institutional decisions, while at the same time seeking to ensure that the electoral process is conducted in an open and responsible manner. With this, the neighbors also want to neutralize the interference of imperialist powers such as the United States, which use the electoral process to influence the electoral process and try to overthrow the government of Nicolás Maduro.

Importance of impartial verification and caution

The call to allow impartial verification of the results is an attempt to ensure that all parties involved can trust the election results. It reflects a concern for the legitimacy of the process and the need to avoid disputes and challenges that could further destabilize the political situation in the country.

Furthermore, the recommendation that political and social actors exercise caution and moderation is an attempt to prevent political tensions from escalating into more serious conflicts. This approach seeks to protect democratic space and ensure that the right to protest is respected within the limits of the law, with special attention to respect for human rights.

As opposition demonstrations become more radical, the government reacts more harshly to prevent unrest. Foreign interests take advantage of this to once again attack the re-elected government, accusing it of disrespecting human rights and the right to protest.

Support for dialogue and search for internal solutions

The statement reinforces the conviction that solutions to the political crisis in Venezuela must emerge from internal processes, reiterating their willingness to support efforts for dialogue and the search for understandings that promote political stability and democracy in Venezuela. This position is consistent with respect for national sovereignty and demonstrates an approach that values Venezuela’s autonomy in the search for solutions to its internal problems.

By expressing their willingness to support efforts to engage in dialogue and seek understanding, the countries involved are demonstrating a constructive and collaborative approach. This support is vital for political stability and the strengthening of democracy in Venezuela, as it provides international support that can help facilitate the conflict resolution process.

The second joint statement from the foreign ministers of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico strikes a careful balance between respect for Venezuelan sovereignty and the need to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process. By emphasizing the importance of impartial verification and moderation, while reaffirming their commitment to dialogue and the search for internal solutions, the countries involved are promoting an approach that aims to support political stability and democracy in Venezuela in a respectful and constructive manner.
