A 95-year-old American linguist is in the capital of São Paulo to recover from a stroke suffered in 2023; His wife, Valeria Wasserman, is Brazilian

The North American linguist, philosopher and writer Noam Chomsky, aged 95, was discharged this Tuesday (June 18, 2024) from the Beneficência Portuguesa hospital in São Paulo. The intellectual had been hospitalized since Tuesday (June 11) to treat a stroke (stroke) suffered in June 2023.

According to the medical bulletin, Chomsky will continue receiving treatment at home, where he lives with his wife, Valeria Wasserman, who is Brazilian. The two have been married since 2015. The linguist, who is professor emeritus at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in Portuguese) and the University of Arizona, both in the United States, received the first medical care in the country.

According to the woman, the move was decided so that he could live in a sunny and flat city, factors that can help stroke victims recover. Therefore, she did not rule out moving to Rio, according to Folha de S.Paulo.

Also according to Valeria Wasserman, the linguist’s routine at the health unit includes monitoring scientific publications and the news, especially information from Gaza. Noah is Jewish and openly against Israeli policy.
