Mette Frederiksen’s office says she was in shock after the attack; attacker was detained by authorities

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was assaulted this Friday (June 7, 2024) by a man in Copenhagen, the country’s capital. The Copenhagen Police reported that after the attack the attacker was detained by the Danish police and that investigations are being carried out.

The prime minister’s office said in a statement that Frederiksen was shocked by the incident, but did not give further details about her condition.

On X (formerly Twitter), Denmark’s Environment Minister, Magnus Heunicke, expressed his concern about the attack. “I must say this shakes all of us who are close to her. Something like this should not happen in our beautiful, safe and free country.”, stated.

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström condemned aggression, describing it as “absolutely terrible”.

The attack suffered by Frederiksen is not an isolated event on the European political scene. In May, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico survived a assassination attemptsignaling an increase in violence against political leaders on the continent.
