President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva congratulated, this Monday (3), the new president of Mexico, Cláudia Sheinbaum, on her victory in the election that ended this Sunday (2). The Brazilian president called the new Mexican president and wished Sheinbaum success in her term.

“President Lula expressed that he will be very enthusiastic about working with the first woman elected president of Mexico and that he considers the result of the election a victory for Latin America and for democratic forces in the construction of more inclusive and sustainable societies,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a note. Lula also classified the result as “a victory for democracy”

Sheinbaum thanked the Brazilian president for his messages: “I thank President Lula for his call and for recognizing the triumph of our movement. Mexico and Brazil are great nations united by a common vision and values. We reaffirm our friendship and desire to continue building a shared future,” he stated.

With 95% of the ballots counted as of Tuesday (4), Cláudia Sheinbaum, from the Morena party, had 59.35% of the votes, while Xóchiti Gálvez, from the coalition of traditional parties, had 27.9%. Jorge Álvarez Máynez came in third place with 10.41%.

Sheinbaum is the first woman elected president of Mexico since the country’s independence 200 years ago. Founder of the Morena party, in partnership with Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), she will take over the National Palace from October 1st.

Earlier, Lula celebrated Sheinbaum’s victory after receiving the president of Croatia, Zoran Milanovic, at the Itamaraty Palace, in Brasília. During his speech, Lula had already said that he would call the president-elect.

Lula and Sheinbaum have already exchanged compliments in social media posts. In Lula’s electoral victory in 2022, Claudia Sheinbaum celebrated the then candidate’s victory on the social network x, formerly Twitter.

“Long live Lula, long live Brazil, long live equality in Latin America!” In another publication, Claudia calls Lula a “social fighter”.
