A building collapsed in Istanbul, capital of Türkiye, this Sunday (June 2, 2024). One person died and at least 8 were injured, according to the country’s authorities. The information is from ABC News.

There were no signs of explosion or seismic activity in the area during the collapse. The cause is still unclear. The structure was 36 years old and collapsed at around 8:40 am local time (2:40 am Brasília time). There were two residences and 4 stores in the building.
Initial investigations indicate that the building was built without complying with architectural and engineering standards. At least 1 floor was added illegally after construction was completed. The details were released by Turkey’s Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Mehmet Özhaseki, on his profile on X.
According to him, preliminary inspections show that sea sand was used in the construction of the building.
According to local authorities, the owner of the apartment and the owner of a restaurant on the ground floor of the building were arrested because of the collapse. At least two people were trapped in the rubble, but were rescued alive.
