Israeli minister calls for “disproportionate” response against Iran

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said Tel Aviv must respond “disproportionate” to Iran for the attack carried out on Saturday (13 April). He gave a statement to Israeli Army Radio, according to information from CNN.

According to Smotrich, the Israeli reaction should make Iranians regret the “the moment they thought about shooting” under Israeli territory. For him, Israel’s response would shape the country’s position in the Middle East.

“[A resposta] it should shake Tehran, so that everyone there realizes that they shouldn’t mess with us.”declared Smotrich.

The Finance Minister is not part of the war cabinet, responsible for defining reactions against Iran. Smotrich, however, highlighted that Israel must maintain the USA as a strategic partner.

The April 13, 2024, Iranian attack was expected. The country had promised to retaliate against the Israelis for the bombing that killed 8 people at the Iranian embassy in Damascus (Syria), on April 1, including a Revolutionary Guard general. Countries blamed Israel, despite the country not taking responsibility, although in the international community it is taken for granted that the order came from Tel Aviv.

According to the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), around 300 drones and missiles were launched by Iran. Israel claims that fighters from the country and allies, such as the USA and the United Kingdom, and the Iron Dome defense system intercepted 99% of the aerial targets.
