With the application, the president of Microsoft will join the Board of Directors of G42, a company in the United Arab Emirates
Microsoft announced this Tuesday (April 16, 2024) the investment of US$ 1.5 billion in the company focused on developing artificial intelligence Group 42 (G42), headquartered in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. With the application, Microsoft President Brad Smith will join G42’s Board of Directors.
The agreement will allow G42 to sell Microsoft services that use AI chips and, in return, the Arab company will need to take devices of Chinese origin from the company. The measure is a way of “responder” the United States government’s concerns about China’s use of technologies.
In October, the US Department of Commerce announced new bans on chip sales to China. The government argued that the aim of the measure was to restrict Chinese capacity “both purchasing and manufacturing certain high-end chips critical to military advantage”.
In the agreement between the North American and UAE technology company, Brad Smith said that both will combine “world-class technology with world-leading standards for safe, reliable and responsible AI, in close coordination with the UAE and US governments”.
The president of Group 42, the Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in turn, stated that the partnership is “testimony to shared values and aspirations for progress, promoting greater cooperation and synergy at a global level.”
The CEO of the UAE group, Peng Xiao, added that the commitment between the 2 companies will expand the presence of G42 services in the international market.
“This partnership significantly increases our presence in the international market, combining G42’s unique artificial intelligence capabilities with Microsoft’s robust global infrastructure”he declared.
