Mexico presented this Thursday (11) a request to the International Court in The Hague for Ecuador to be suspended as a member of the UN and for its expulsion process to begin following the invasion of the Mexican embassy in Quito last Friday (5). to arrest former vice president Jorge Glas.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador presented this Thursday (11) the document sent to the International Court. Obrador asks that Ecuador be declared responsible for the damage it caused to Mexico and that, if the violation of the principles of the United Nations charter is confirmed, the Court begins the process of its expulsion, in addition to establishing the precedent that States with origin similar are expelled from the Organization.
“Within the support of the international legal order and making use of the law, we decided, following instructions from the president, to hold Ecuador responsible for the flagrant transgression of the inviolability of our embassy, as well as for the physical attacks perpetrated against our diplomats, against their physical and moral integrity “, said Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena, who presented the country’s request sent to the Court of The Hague at the National Palace.
OAS condemns embassy invasion
The Organization of American States (OAS) approved on Wednesday (10) a resolution that condemns the invasion of the Mexican embassy in Ecuador. With 29 votes in favor, a single vote against from Ecuador itself, and two countries absent, the OAS Permanent Council approved the resolution “Invasion of the Ecuadorian Police into the Embassy of Mexico in Violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, and the Institution of Diplomatic Asylum.”
The resolution determined to “strongly condemn the acts of violence carried out against the physical integrity and dignity of the mission’s diplomatic personnel”, such as the head of the embassy, Roberto Canseco, who appears in the images of the invasion being attacked by Ecuadorian police officers.
