Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons of butter

  • 4 tablespoons of wheat flour

  • 4 cups of milk

  • Salt to taste

  • Nutmeg to taste (optional)

Directions

  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • When the butter is completely melted, add the wheat flour. Stir continuously with a whisk (wire whisk) to avoid the formation of lumps.
  • Cook the butter and flour mixture for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly. This will help eliminate the raw flour taste.
  • Gradually add the milk to the mixture, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Continue stirring until the mixture is well incorporated and begins to thicken.
  • Cook the sauce over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches the desired consistency. The béchamel should coat the back of a wooden spoon.
  • Season with salt to taste and, if desired, add a pinch of nutmeg to enhance the flavor. Stir well to incorporate the seasonings.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and use the béchamel sauce as needed in your recipe.
