Make caramelized onion using the ingredients suggested below and following the step-by-step instructions.

Ingredients

  • 4 large onions, cut into thin slices

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter

  • 2 teaspoons sugar (optional, but helps with caramelization)

  • Salt to taste

  • Black pepper to taste

  • 1/4 cup red wine or balsamic vinegar (optional, for flavor)

Directions

  • Peel the onions and cut them into thin slices.
  • Heat the olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced ​​onions to the skillet and stir to coat with the oil/butter.
  • Cook over medium heat for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. 
    Add sugar, if using.
  • Reduce the heat to low and continue cooking the onions for another 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. 
    The onions should be golden and caramelized.
  • If using red wine or balsamic vinegar, add it to the skillet after the onions are caramelized. 
    Stir well to deglaze the bottom of the pan and mix the flavors.
  • Season the caramelized onions with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Remove from heat and let cool slightly before using.
