The Iranian government sent, this Saturday (19), a negotiation proposal to the United States to end the war between the countries. Iran’s security chief Mohsen Rezaei laid out the latest conditions for ending the war and said Tehran had conveyed its terms to the US through Qatari mediators. According to him, the proposal is already being evaluated by Washington.
Among the conditions are the end of the war on all fronts, including Lebanon; the release of billion-dollar Iranian funds that are frozen; the end of all US attacks on Iranian territory, the naval blockade of Iranian ports and US interference in Iran’s internal affairs; and also the termination of United States cooperation with what Iran called “the opponents of our revolution.”
The president of the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, emphasized this Sunday morning (20) that the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked and will not be reopened until the United States’ commitments are fulfilled. He said the conditions proposed by Iran are “completely clear, rational and non-negotiable.” Meanwhile, the US maintains a blockade on Iran’s southern ports.
The attempt at negotiation comes after an increase in conflicts in the region with the end of the last ceasefire agreement, signed on June 17 with a 60-day deadline. Since then, the escalation of attacks has caused the price of oil to surpass the US$100 mark in recent weeks.
The United States has not yet responded to Iran’s new conditions, but, on Saturday (19), it issued a warning to citizens in Iraq, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar, Lebanon, Kuwait and Jordan to exercise “greater vigilance”. Donald Trump, who was at Camp David, the president’s rural retreat, returned to Washington early, but no explanation was given by the White House for his return.
