The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and the President of the United States, Donald Trump, discussed this Tuesday (8) the outcome of negotiations on the Ukraine war during the visit of US presidential special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, in Moscow and Kiev in recent days. The information was released by Russian presidential advisor Yuri Ushakov.
According to Ushakov, the two leaders had an hour-long telephone conversation in which the Russian leader praised his American counterpart’s mediation efforts. Russia’s presidential advisor added that the tone of the conversation was respectful and professional.
Furthermore, it was reported that the US president advocated the development of large-scale economic cooperation between Russia and the United States after the end of the Ukrainian conflict.
“Donald Trump clearly advocated the desirability of a quick end to the conflict, which would immediately open up impressive and far-reaching prospects for the full restoration of relations between the US and Russia. In his view, this would particularly impact trade and economic ties, which promise colossal benefits for both countries,” said Yuri Ushakov.
On September 5 and 6, US presidential special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner paid working visits to Moscow and Kiev. Today’s telephone conversation between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump focused on summarizing these working visits. In general, the two leaders assessed Witkoff and Kushner’s visits as positive, according to Yuriy Ushakov.
“An objective and complete analysis was made of what is currently happening during the special military operation and, in general, of how we see the prospects for progress on the battlefield and the achievement of the goals and objectives set for the operation. In fact, he (the Russian president) outlined what the Americans could realistically do to quickly end the military operations”, added Vladimir Putin’s advisor.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the US position on Ukraine is motivating Russia to continue discussions with Washington.
According to him, the Trump administration is basing its negotiations with Russia over Ukraine on the “ground realities” of the war, which has generated a positive response from Moscow and a willingness to continue negotiations.
“And the fact that the Americans, in all their contacts with us, especially with President Putin, base their actions on these realities, naturally provokes a positive response in us and makes us willing to continue conversations with them. They recognize these fundamental points and seek to be helpful in this regard. I believe that this deserves support,” Lavrov said.
Negative reaction in Ukraine
In Ukraine’s internal political context, the visit of US negotiators to Moscow and Kiev caused critical reactions in the country’s parliament. The deputy of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament) Anna Skorokhod declared that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner presented to Kiev, on Sunday, a series of conditions for achieving peace that turned out to be “worse” than the proposals previously made to Ukraine.
“Not only was there no progress, but the conditions presented were even worse than the previous ones”, declared the parliamentarian in an interview with Ukrainian journalist Vitali Diki.
According to her, previously there were no demands regarding changes to the Constitution and the recognition of territories, whereas now these points are among the demands presented. The deputy added that there are other nuances that she prefers not to reveal, having obtained the information through unofficial channels.
After the meeting in Kiev, Witkoff declared, last Monday (7), that there had been “substantial progress” in negotiations with Russia and Ukraine to end the conflict.
