The New Development Bank (NBD), known as the BRICS Bank, is prepared to act as a reliable partner for countries in areas such as sustainable development, clean energy and smart and resilient infrastructure. The statement was made by the president of the NBD, Dilma Rousseff, during the seminar “The role of the New Development Bank in mobilizing private capital in member countries”, according to information published on the institution’s website.
The event was held by the NBD in partnership with the Indian Ministry of Finance and brought together representatives from government bodies, financial institutions, companies, the academic community and experts from the Brics countries. Participants discussed practical measures to increase the mobilization of private capital for infrastructure development and the implementation of sustainable projects.
The seminar took place during the meeting of finance ministers and central bank presidents of the BRICS countries.
Dilma Rousseff highlighted that the bank’s operations are aligned with the priorities of the group’s Indian presidency in 2026, which include resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainable development.
India’s presidency of the BRICS this year gives special importance to our discussion. The NDB is ready to be a reliable partner in transforming commitments related to sustainable development, clean energy and smart and resilient infrastructure into concrete results. […] Created by the founding countries of BRICS, NBD is a bank of the Global South and for the Global South. Its mission is to mobilize resources for infrastructure and sustainable development, using the best available innovations and without imposing conditions,” said Rousseff.
The president of the NBD also highlighted that the mobilization of private capital is a strategic priority for the institution.
India’s Finance Minister and country’s representative at the NDB, Nirmala Sitharaman, highlighted, in turn, the role of multilateral development banks in reducing investment risks, increasing the attractiveness of projects and strengthening investor confidence. According to her, it is necessary to create stable and predictable conditions, as well as reliable long-term mechanisms that allow for increased private sector participation in the BRICS countries.
“The New Development Bank plays a fundamental role. Its competitive advantage lies not only in financing infrastructure, but also in strengthening the investment ecosystem in member countries”, declared Sitharaman.
During the meeting, participants also analyzed innovative financing instruments, risk mitigation mechanisms and partnerships for financing technologies in national currencies. The initiatives can contribute to increasing the attractiveness of infrastructure projects for private investors.
The New Development Bank was created in 2015 by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The institution complements the work of multilateral and regional financial organizations in supporting economic growth and global development.
