US memorandum of understanding with Iran expired last Monday; Trump said he will no longer hold negotiations

The President of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican Party), posted this Tuesday (18.Aug.2026) on his Truth Social account an image that marks the Strait of Hormuz as North American territory. The Republican had already announced the region as a North American territory previously, on August 14.

Disputed between the United States and Iran, the Strait of Hormuz is a strategic maritime route for the global supply of oil, natural gas and fertilizers. It is located between Iran and the Musandam Peninsula, shared by the United Arab Emirates and Musandam Province, territory from Oman.

The relationship between the US and Iran returned to tension after the end of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in June, expired on Monday (Aug 17) after the end of its 60 days of validity.

This Tuesday (18th August) Trump these that he no longer holds talks with Iranian leaders and that there are no negotiations scheduled with the country. He also reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz remains open.
