At least 11 people died after a series of air strikes carried out by Israel in southern Lebanon in the early hours of Saturday (15), according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, as reported by Al Jazeera. According to the international agency, Israeli Air Force warplanes struck homes in the villages of Ansar and Deir El Zahrani.
The most lethal bombing occurred in Ansar, where seven people from the same family died, including three children and two women. The official report from local authorities, as reported by international agencies, includes at least another eleven people injured as a result of the explosions.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam classified the military escalation as a matter of “extreme seriousness”. He said intense shelling of residents in their homes undermines efforts to consolidate stability in the country’s southern region. The countries are officially in negotiations for an agreement mediated by the United States.
Salam refuted Tel Aviv’s justifications about the targets hit in the operation, which he says attacked Hezbollah group equipment. “The seven martyrs of the Israeli bombing of Ansar are not ‘military infrastructure’, and the children and women killed in it are not military targets,” the prime minister wrote.
The prime minister argued that the responsibility for dealing with any military infrastructure on Lebanese territory lies exclusively with the Lebanese State and Army. According to Salam, the supposed existence of these structures does not grant Israel the right to violate the territory or expose civilians to danger.
Salam’s note also calls for Israel to halt the offensive. The Prime Minister declared that the security of the population and the right to life in their own land are not subjects subject to negotiations or bargains.
The Israeli Armed Forces confirmed the attacks, describing them as an action against Hezbollah structures in a security zone in southern Lebanon. According to the Israeli statement circulated internationally, the offensive was a response to previous actions carried out against its soldiers in the region.
Since the recent escalation of hostilities began on March 2, at least 4,300 people have died in Lebanon. The conflict intensified after Israel occupied a strip of land in southern Lebanese territory during combat operations earlier this year.
