In a telephone conversation with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva this Friday (10), the interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, thanked the help provided by the Brazilian government after the earthquakes that hit the neighboring country at the end of June.
The latest balance, released this Friday by the president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, points to at least 4,118 dead and 16,740 injured,
Brazilian teams from the Civil Defense, Fire Departments, Armed Forces and the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) returned this Friday night from Venezuela, after two weeks of working on a humanitarian support mission. The Brazilian Navy also set up a field hospital in the city of La Guaira, the hardest hit location, where it provided more than a thousand medical treatments and low-complexity surgeries and continues to provide services.
To the Venezuelan president, Lula reiterated Brazil’s willingness to continue contributing to the reconstruction of the country and supporting the population. Rodriguez, in turn, said that Venezuela is preparing to rebuild the affected areas, focusing on building homes for families who have been left homeless.
The Brazilian operation, however, continues. The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) aircraft that brought the team back to Brazil also carried another 56 soldiers who will replace the professionals leaving the hospital. 4.9 tons of medicines, medical supplies and equipment destined for the hospital were also transported.
The balance presented by the Brazilian government lists six humanitarian flights, 60 tons of supplies, equipment and medical inputs, 100 water purifiers, a field hospital with up to 30 beds and emergency care, 93 Navy soldiers to operate the field hospital, 71 military firefighters, four Civil Defense specialists and six Anatel technicians. Venezuela has received aid from more than 30 countries since the June 24 earthquakes.
The Brazilian government is also evaluating a new phase of humanitarian aid for Venezuela. In a meeting this Friday, Itamaraty said it awaits more information from the Venezuelan side with an indication of what they most need assistance with to define its new operation plan in the country.
Solidarity between peoples
On Thursday (9), President Lula received representatives from the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) to discuss actions to support Venezuela. The meeting discussed initiatives such as sending food and medical teams, as well as strengthening cooperation and solidarity actions between the two countries.
At the end of June, two consecutive earthquakes hit the northern region of the country, where Caracas is located. In addition to the deaths, the tremors collapsed buildings and left a trail of destruction in the Venezuelan capital and surrounding areas. The earthquakes were the strongest in the country in more than 100 years.
