“The birth and survival of the American nation under God is simply the best and most incredible thing that has ever happened on this planet by human hands,” said US President Donald Trump to a mostly white audience on Friday night (3). The speech kicked off celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the United States. The date refers to the country’s proclamation of independence, which occurred on July 4, 1776.

The grandiose tone was the keynote of the speech: Trump traced the origins of the USA to Ancient Greece, stated that no country did as much charity as the USA and praised the records in the number of Olympic medals and Nobel prizes – a moment in which he regretted not having received the honor despite, in his own words, “having ended eight wars”.

But Trump’s speech was not just about megalomania: he also warned of the “resurgence of the communist threat“, which he identified as more dangerous than the two world wars. “Communism represents the worst ideas and abuses in history by the worst people. The founding of America represents the best ideas and traditions in history by the best people,” he declared.

The solution to contain this threat was presented in the speech: send the communists into exile.

Trump took the opportunity to criticize those who spread “Marxist lies”, such as that “we live on stolen land and that our heroes were oppressors”. The speech took place at Mount Rushmore, in South Dakota. The site was stolen in 1877 from the Lakota indigenous people, who consider it sacred territory. The faces of four former presidents were carved into the mound: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Washington and Jefferson were slave owners. The four were praised by Trump as men of great action, ambition and intelligence.

In yet another nod to his supporters, Trump spoke of the importance of approving the SAVE America Act, a proposal that changes the rules for voting in the US and, according to critics, aims to make it more difficult for minorities to vote. When citing the proposal, the US president stated that, if it is approved, “we will not lose an election in a hundred years”. To top it off, he said that the “Communist Party [provavelmente se referindo ao Partido Democrata] It is made up of illegal immigrants, criminals and people who don’t want to work.”
