The interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, announced this Friday (03) the creation of a US$200 million international fund aimed at assisting the victims of the earthquake that hit Venezuela eight days ago.

Called the Fund for the Recovery and Reconstruction of Venezuela, it will receive donations intended for the reconstruction of homes and will be managed by the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF).

In a press conference with foreign journalists, the president announced that she had a meeting with the United States Department of State and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to consolidate diplomatic and financial rapprochement.

At the press conference, she also took stock of the numbers. To date, 6,462 people have been rescued alive from the rubble. Currently, more than 19 thousand civilians and military personnel help with the actions. Aid was concentrated in the La Guaira region, the most affected.

Rodríguez reported that more than 12,400 injured people received care through the public and private health network and field hospitals sent by dozens of countries, with surgeries paid for by the State. As of July 1, 13,942 people had been discharged.

Property tax exemptions were also granted, facilitating negotiations with banks for housing loans and establishing temporary shelters that served more than 11 thousand people, organized by families and with teams of psychologists.

Regarding international media criticism of the militarization of affected areas, Delcy denounced the politicization of a humanitarian emergency as “despicable” and underlined the State’s responsibility for order and security to facilitate search and rescue operations.
