The Consulate General of Venezuela in São Paulo began, last Friday (26), a campaign to collect protective equipment. The items will be used to support relief teams and volunteers working in areas hit by the earthquakes that devastated the country last week.

The humanitarian crisis in the neighboring country was caused by two consecutive tremors, above 7 degrees on the Richter scale, which left thousands dead, injured and missing, according to Venezuelan authorities. Search and rescue operations remain concentrated mainly in La Guaira, one of the regions most affected by the disaster.

The consulate informed that donations will be destined exclusively to workers involved in emergency assistance. Protective helmets, flashlights, protective gloves, protective glasses, rubber boots and tents are being received.

According to the diplomatic representation, donations of water, medicine, clothing, food or money will not be accepted. The orientation is to concentrate efforts on obtaining equipment considered essential to reinforce the security and operational capacity of brigades in the field.

Donations can be delivered directly to the headquarters of the Venezuelan Consulate, located at Rua Teixeira da Silva, 660, in the Paraíso neighborhood, in the capital of São Paulo. Additional information can be requested by email [email protected].

Brazil maintains a humanitarian mission in Venezuelan territory. This Sunday (29), the Brazilian Navy began setting up a field hospital in La Guaira, in a joint operation with the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), for emergency care and stabilization of victims.

The mobilization was authorized by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and is part of the federal government’s response to the disaster, in conjunction with Venezuelan authorities. In addition to Brazil, around 30 countries have already sent teams to assist in rescue work and humanitarian assistance.
