The celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the assault on the Moncada barracks and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, who projected Fidel Castro and the Cuban guerrillas to the revolutionary victory, take place this July 26th in Cuba and in several countries that have movements of solidarity with the country.
In the city of Santiago de Cuba, the General of the Cuban Army, Raúl Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution, and the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, attended the commemoration early in the morning, at 5:15 am, the time when the revolutionaries began the invasion.
According to the Cuban newspaper Granmamore than 10,000 people attended the festivities and more than 26 friendly nations sent representatives, in an act that took place in the former military fortress of the Moncada barracks, which had projections of the revolutionary leaders on its facade – the place is now a school center and a museum .
Also present were the Commanders of the Revolution, Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, a Moncada robber, and Guillermo García Frías, classified as “part of the historic generation”.
MR26
The invasion of the barracks on July 26, 1953 is celebrated as the beginning of the process that would lead to the victory of the Cuban Revolution on January 1, 1959. Although the attempt was frustrated at the time, the rebels transformed the act into a political victory and founded the 26th of July Revolutionary Movement (MR26).
