On the morning of Thursday (25), a few hours after a virtual conversation between Palestinian journalists, the National Federation of Journalists (Fenaj) and about 50 Brazilian professionals, the tent from which the reports departed was bombarded by Israel. The space functioned as a journalist solidarity center in Gaza and gathered at least 20 professionals at the time of the attack.

The confirmation was made by the President of the Palestinian Journalists Union (PJS), Naser Abu Baker, to the Palestinian ambassador in Brazil, Ibrahim Alzeben. A nearby source reported that journalists managed to escape alive. During the meeting, Mustafa Al Bayed, correspondent of the Russian channel, had said that the tent where they were, even identified as the press, could be bombarded by the Israeli army at any time.

Systematic target of the press

According to PD data, since the beginning of the Israeli offensive 302 journalists have been killed, 252 in Gaza and 50 in West Bank. Among them, 34 women. In addition, 400 were injured, 200 prisoners, 270 expelled from the Gaza Strip and 600 family members also lost their lives. At least 647 journalists were destroyed and 120 headquarters of bombarded press agencies.

“The state of occupation wants to kill journalists because they want to murder the truth, because they don’t want anyone to know about this ethnic cleaning,” Naser Abu Baker denounced. Fidaa Asaliya, one of the journalists present at the tent, stressed: “We are at the center of solidarity amid a constant bombing that threatens our lives, but we continue to do our work.”

International solidarity

“The idea of the meeting was exactly promoting the opportunity of our Palestinians, who are being brutally murdered, reporting the reality they face to report on an offensive that has killed nearly 70,000 people, mostly women and children,” said Fenaj President Samira de Castro. She regretted the fact that Israel monitored the meeting, acting soon after “to silence more voices in her genocidal and ethnic crusade.” The entity requested concrete measures of international organizations and proposed with the International Federation of Journalists (FIJ) a day of global stoppage in memory of the dead professionals.
