PCdoB confirms presence at the party of Avante 2025 in Portugal

PCdoB will be present once again at the Avante Festival, a political-cultural event organized since 1976 by the Portuguese Communist Party. Considered one of the largest left meetings in Europe and the world, the party will be held from September 5 to 7 (Friday to Sunday) at Quinta da Atalaia, in the parish of Amora, in the municipality of Seixal, land near the bay that has become fixed headquarters of the meeting since 1990.

This year, the member of the PCdoB Central Committee, Aldo Arantes, will represent the Brazilian communists in Portugal. He is one of the guests to join the debate table “Latin America: Fight and Challenges”, along with the delegations of the parties of Cuba, Colombia, Uruguay and other countries.

Aldo will also promote during the party of Avante the launch of his last book, “Mastery of Minds: From the Military Coup to Cultural War”, a work that brings important reflections on the advance of the far right in Brazil and in the world.

“The Festival of Avante is a very important moment for all communists in the world, when we can meet, exchange experiences and reaffirm the international solidarity of the communists with world peace and in the fight against the advance of the far right and fascism. of lawyers and lawyers for democracy, justice and citizenship (ADJC)

Another activity promoted by PCdoB at the party of Avante 2024 will be the screening of the film Doctor Araguaia ”, independent production directed by Edson Cabral about the trajectory of doctor João Carlos Haas Sobrinho, killed in the Araguaia guerrillas by the Brazilian military dictatorship.

Avante at 50

The party of Avante is about to complete 50 years of life in 2026 and, in the wake of the celebrations, the space of the Communist Party of Brazil at the event will also celebrate two decades of contributions to this one of the largest and most important left meetings in the world.

In 2025, the PCdoB space completes 19 years of participation in the Festa do Avante, with always active presence and valuing Brazilian culture. In the party’s famous stall of the party are sold the disputed caipirinhas, a good feijoada and materials such as newspapers, shirts, books, caps, bottons and other means of dissemination of the Brazilian struggle for socialism.

Militancy is who organizes the party

Organized since 1976, the party of Avante is fully made militantly, since its conception, through curatorship, production and even the safety and assembly of the spaces.

Visitors can watch numerous music concerts from various musical genres (including classical music), in various stages of different dimensions, performances by coral groups, folk ranches, street animation, dance, plays, cinema. There is a space with a playground with activities and programming dedicated to children. The party also includes an important sports program with numerous modalities. One of the high moments is the holding of the opening rally and the last day of the show.

The artistic and musical part is one of the main highlights of the party, which has been, since the first edition, a stage where the world fits. From fado to rock, from Portuguese popular music to jazz, rap to songs from the world, from pop intervention music, from Celta to Punk, from post rock to funk, through hip hop, from Afro Beat to Blues, from R&B to reggae, from kuduru to electronics and the repetitive minimum of all those who do not integrate into formal categories. Of the most consecrated names to those who will be in the future, everyone goes through the party of Avante!

Brazilian artists will perform

The Banda Capixaba Dead Fish will be attraction on September 6 (Saturday), at 17h, on the 25th of April stage, the main of the party of Avante 2025. Formed in the early 1990s, Dead Fish became one of the main names of Brazilian hardcore, with politicized and energetic lyrics. In 2024, he released his maze of memory, his tenth album, keeping the punk and hardcore essence alive. With 30 years of career, the band continues to denounce injustices and mobilize audiences with energy, attitude and social criticism.

Already singer Mariana Aydar is the Brazilian guest to take the stage of the Auditorium May 1st on Saturday (6/9), at 19h. She is a winner of the Latin Grammy in 2020 and 2024, has six albums and a career marked by the reinvention of forró. He held two documentaries and is founder of the Forrozin block, which shakes the São Paulo carnival. It has already divided the stage with names like Gilberto Gil, Elba Ramalho and Criolo. In their lyrics, it empowers women and proposes new readings about love and identity.

Display of the movie “Doctor Araguaia”

Produced in Tocantins, northern Brazil, and directed by Edson Cabral, the documentary rescues the trajectory of the young gaucho who exchanged the elite offices for a makeshift hospital in the interior of Maranhão and later became the doctor of the Araguaia Guerrilla, until he was killed by the dictatorship in 1972.

Aldo Arantes is a lawyer, Master in Political Science from UnB, member of the Central Committee of the PCdoB and national coordinator of the ADJC. He was leader of UNE, leader of Oclae, Constituent Deputy, Secretary of the Environment of Goiás and director of the Ministry of Education. Political prisoner during the dictatorship, lived 11 years in hiding, having been arrested and tortured.

Launch of the book “Mastery of Minds: From the Military Coup to the Cultural War”, by Aldo Arantes

The book explores the advance of the far right in Brazil and in the world, situating it within a historical context of the “cultural war”. Aldo Arantes resorts to Gramsci’s theory of hegemony to explain how the far right exerts ideological domination, using Think Tanks, the media and social networks. The author denounces Lawfare and Fake News, highlighting his role in the pursuit of leftist leaders and the creation of ideological bubbles.
