Israel’s genocidal offensive about the Gaza Strip and the West Bank has moved international public opinion and further strengthened support for the Palestinian cause. BBC survey reveals that 147 countries already recognize the Palestinian state formally – and the number will grow even more in the coming months.
Since the beginning of the conflict between Hamas and Israel, in October 2023, nine nations formalized this support: Armenia, Bahamas, Barbados, Slovenia, Spain, Ireland, Jamaica, Norway and Trinidad and Tobago.
For the coming months, six other adhesions are awaited. Until September, Canada, France and the United Kingdom must officialize recognition with the United Nations (UN). Already Finland, New Zealand and Portugal send a decision on the same direction.
If all these movements are materialized, the scenario that projects itself definitively changes the correlation of forces in the UN, where 80% of member countries will be on the Palestinian side. The most relevant change, however, will be on the organization’s security council, which has as permanent United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, China and France.
In November 1988, when the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization) proclaimed the independence of his state, Chinese and Russians immediately left his creation. The United States, by contrast, have always maintained the alignment of Israel’s conservative posture, averse to the solution of both states. Not to displease the Americans, the United Kingdom and France omitted.
Thus, for 37 years, the Palestinian state has never been the majority position within the UN Security Council. With France and the United Kingdom now changing position, the formal creation of the new state is supported by four of the five members of the organ, in evidence of the growing isolation of Israel and the United States.
Genocide numbers
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is one of the allies of the cause. On December 3, 2010, during Lula’s second term in Planalto, Brazil formally recognized the Palestinian state. In addition, he stands out as one of the most critical voices to genocide.
In July, the number of dead as a result of Israeli attacks exceeded the 60,000 mark, according to Gaza’s health authorities. An investigation conducted by a pool of vehicles, such as the British The GuardianHe pointed out that, according to Israel’s own military intelligence service, 83% of victims are civilians. In addition to the dead in bombing, there are thousands of losses related to hunger or malnutrition.
Although this food deprivation scenario has been underway since 2024, it was only this Friday (22) that the UN officially declared the state of hunger in Gaza. “Making people starving by military objectives is a war crime,” UN Chief Human Rights Chief of Human Rights, Volker TĂĽrk, said that more than half a million people face “catastrophic” conditions of food insecurity in the region, at risk of death.
The dismay guarantees more support to the Palestinian cause, but, as the BBC recalls, the Palestinian path is still long: “recognition by other countries is one of four important factors-but not the most determining-for the existence of a state. In international relations theory, the three key constitutive elements for a state are: territory, population and sovereignty”.
