Florida Governor will formalize the candidacy next week; ex-president remains favorite
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, 44, is expected to announce his candidacy for the presidency of the United States in 2024 next week.
DeSantis must send the documentation to formalize the pre-candidacy for the Federal Election Commission next Thursday (May 25, 2023), a date that coincides with a meeting he will have with supporters in Miami. However, the official launch should happen only in the following week. The information is from the news agency Reuters.
Among other competitors, DeSantis will compete with former President Donald Trump for the Republican Party seat in the election race. Trump announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination during an event at their resort in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, on November 15, 2022.
During a rally in Pennsylvania last November, the former US president used the nickname “Ron DeSanctimonious” to refer to the governor. The term is a pun on the surname De Santis with the word “sanctimonious” (hypocrite, in English).
the committee Never Back Down, which can raise unlimited funds for the governor’s campaign, has been hiring staff in early voting states and running TV ads defending DeSantis and criticizing Trump.

WHO IS RON DESANTIS
Ronald Dion DeSantis, 44, is the 46th governor of the State of Florida, in the United States. He is married to Casey DeSantis, a former television presenter, and has 3 children: Madison, Mamie and Mason. He was born in the city of Jacksonville -the largest city in the state he governs- on September 14, 1978.
DeSantis studied history at Yale and studied law at Harvard. During his 2nd year in law school, he was assigned to the legal arm of the US Navy. He worked at the Guantánamo prison in Cuba. He was also legal adviser to the “Navy Seals” (Navy unit known for acting at sea, in the air and on land), the US Navy’s elite group, among those sent to Iraq.
He began his political career in 2012 as a representative of Florida in the House of Representatives.
In the 2022 midterm elections, DeSantis was re-elected to office with 59.4% of the vote. He ran against Democrat Charlie Crist, who had 40% of the vote.
