Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov ended his trip to Latin America this Thursday (04/20) with a visit to Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and Army General Raúl Castro.
During the meeting, Lavrov again stated that his visit to the continent aims to “continue the work against the hegemonic conception of power in the United States, while defending respect for the sovereignty of States in an equal manner.”
The head of Russian diplomacy also expressed that “we will continue to work together in the international arena to mobilize countries that also reject such a dictate, so that they work together in the formation of a multipolar world order.”
The visit to Cuba was the fourth and last stop on a trip in which Lavrov passed through four countries in Latin America. The first stop was in Brazil, on Monday (17/04), where he met with Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, at Itamaraty.
The following day, the Russian Foreign Minister visited Venezuela. The third stop was this Wednesday (19/04), in Nicaragua.
Hours before meeting Castro and Díaz-Canel, Lavrov met with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, who received him at Havana International Airport, with whom he made a joint declaration, in which he ratified Russia’s position against the economic blockade, trade and financial burden imposed on Cuba by the United States more than 60 years ago.
For his part, the Cuban chancellor thanked Moscow for its support to the island during the covid-19 pandemic, sending masks and supplies for the manufacture of medicines needed to care for those infected.
Before Lavrov’s departure, the Russian delegation announced an invitation for the Cuban Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, to pay a visit to Moscow, to meet with President Vladimir Putin, in June.
