The president of Mexico, Cláudia Sheinbaum, mocked this Wednesday (8) the proposal of the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America”, in reference to the USA. Sheinbaum stated that the United States should be called “Mexican America”

“Obviously the name of the Gulf of Mexico is recognized by the United Nations. Why don’t we call [os Estados Unidos] from Mexican America? It looks good, doesn’t it?”, replied the Mexican president in a provocative tone.

Sheinbaum made the statements during his usual morning press conference, and was in front of a 17th century world map showing the region of North America, especially what is now known as the United States and Canada, called of Mexican America.

Despite the response, Sheinbaum said he “will have a good relationship with President Trump. “What am I based on? That there was a good relationship with President (Andrés Manuel) López Obrador (2018-24)”, he said, in reference to his predecessor and ally.

The Mexican president’s comments were made one day after Trump said he wanted to change the region’s name to the “Gulf of America”, alluding to the fact that the United States uses the term “America”, in English, to designate its own country. country.

“We’re going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which sounds great. That covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of the United States, what a beautiful name. And it is appropriate,” Trump said as he addressed reporters at Mar-a-Lago.

The Mexican president also gave a simple response to Trump’s claim that her country is “essentially run by cartels”. “It’s false. Mexico is governed by its people”, countered Sheinbaum.
Referring to comments made by Trump the previous day, the Mexican leader suggested that “maybe I was misinformed and think that Felipe Calderón and García Luna still govern.”

Calderón is a former president who governed Mexico from 2006 to 2012. Genaro García Luna is a former Calderón government official who was convicted in the United States of accepting bribes from drug cartels.
