Criticizing the international press, Palestinian journalist Shahd Safi gave an interview to the newspaper Folha de São Paulo. For her, Israel is the biggest culprit for the more than 44,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza, however, the media has its share of the blame.
Safi states that the media is “complicit in this genocide” and participates in propaganda that “dehumanizes Palestinians”, which contributes to more deaths.
The communicator observes that the Western media supports Israel’s narrative while minimizing the contextualization of the conditions that led to the conflict in the Palestinian territory. In his observation, while Palestinian victims are reduced to numbers of dead and injured, Israelis are humanized.
This week Safi is in Brazil for appointments. The next one will be on Thursday (28), in a lecture he will give at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences at USP, at the International Seminar ‘Racism, Colonialism and Genocide in Palestine’.
Safi, now residing in the US, was in Rafah when the war broke out and continued reporting on the war that he described as “covering the genocide”. After losing many friends and acquaintances, he left Gaza via the southern border with Egypt in March – the conflict began on October 7, 2023.

It was the first time he left the territory, which he classified as a real prison even before the war, when he realized the conditions in which they lived imposed by Israel’s siege.
