Victims were immigrants from Sri Lanka and were attacked at home; 4 children, including a 2-month-old baby, were killed
Police in Ottawa, the capital of Canada, stated that 6 people were killed on Wednesday night (March 6, 2024). The victims were stabbed inside their home in the suburb of Barrhaven. Police arrived at the crime scene after 11pm after neighbors called 911.
The victims were Darshani Banbaranayake Ekanyake, a 35-year-old woman, and her children aged 7, 4, 2 and a 2-month-old baby, as well as a 40-year-old family acquaintance, all from Sri Lanka. The father of the family, whose name and age were not disclosed, suffered serious injuries and is hospitalized.
Febrio De-Zoysa, a 19-year-old Sri Lankan student, was arrested and considered the main suspect in the crime. According to authorities, De-Zoysa had no prior record with the police and was living in the same house as her family.
The crime surprised the country’s authorities, given the region’s history. In 2023, there were 14 murders in Ottawa, which has a population of more than 1 million. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was shocked and defined the case as “a terrible crime”.
