Projections indicate victory for the EPP, the party of the current president of the European Commission

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, celebrated this Sunday (June 9, 2024) the victory of the center-right in the elections for the European Union Parliament. “That It’s incredible, we had a fantastic campaign, we were determined and united, and now we won the elections European”, said Von der Leyen in Brussels (Belgium), the bloc’s headquarters.

According to projections, the center-right EPP (European People’s Party, translating the acronym into Portuguese) secured 189 seats in Parliament, or 26.25% of the total (720). The result, although partial, favors the re-election of Von der Leyen, who is from the EPP.

The 65-year-old German politician has held the position of European chief executive since 2019. Von der Leyen must have the support of the majority of the 27 EU leaders in the European Council. If her reelection is confirmed, she will remain in the post for another 5 years.

To occupy the position of president of the European Commission, a candidate would need to have at least 361 votes from the 720 parliamentarians. Then, the European Council validates the choice.
