The Venezuelan opposition, led by far-right leader Marina Corina Machado and her protégé Edmundo González, is investing in fake news to destabilize the country amid Western pressure against reelected President Nicolás Maduro. In recent weeks, Corina has suggested an electoral turnaround and announced González’s inauguration as president.

After the July 28 elections, in which the Chavista candidate representing the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) received 51.20% of the votes against 44.2% for former ambassador González, the country’s fascist opposition began a campaign of lies to discredit the electoral justice system.

Before the elections, the Plataforma Unitária group had already refused to sign an agreement to recognize the result of the election.

After the results were announced, the far right led by former congresswoman María Corina Machado claimed to have won the race and used the electoral records as an argument for this. According to this sector, 70% of the records that would guarantee the victory of former ambassador Edmundo González Urrutia were collected.

Last Saturday, the Superior Court of Justice (TSJ) of Venezuela announced the beginning of the expert analysis of all electoral materials, such as the detailed ballot records and the testimonies of former presidential candidates.

The final phase of document evaluation aims to determine the final decision on the process opened by President Nicolás Maduro on July 31 in the face of accusations of electoral fraud by the opposition far right.

Disrespecting the country’s electoral justice system, Corina Machado said this Monday (12) that Edmundo González will assume the Presidency of Venezuela on January 10, 2025.

“González will be the new head of state and new commander of the Venezuelan Armed Forces, and this will depend on what all of us do, Venezuelans inside and outside the country. It depends on whether this strength, organization, conviction and commitment that we have used in recent months and which has had a resounding victory remains strong and growing. And that is why I know that on January 10th we will have a new president,” declared Corina.

In another attempt to destabilize Venezuelan democracy, the North American press, through the Wall Street Journal, reported that the US would be putting “everything on the table to persuade Maduro to leave before his term ends in January.”

The news was denied by the White House through spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre and deputy State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel. “This is not true. We have not made any offer of amnesty to Maduro or others since this election,” Patel said in a statement from the US State Department.
