Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said on Thursday that political, economic and hegemonic interests are preventing “a human solution to tragedy in Gaza.”

He reiterated Pope Leo XIV’s appeal for respect for international humanitarian law and against the forced displacement of the population.

Parolin highlighted the courage of orthodox and Catholics religious leaders who decided to remain with the Palestinian people, despite the order of evacuation of the Israeli government. However, he said that he does not know how this will be possible in the face of the “total control of the territory” by Israel.

In the diplomatic level, the Secretary of State confirmed that the Holy See maintain contacts with the US Administration and expressed expectation that the visit of Israeli Chancellor Gideon Sa’ar to Washington produces concrete signs of peace, such as ceasefire and safe access to humanitarian aid.

Parolin admitted that the Israeli government “has not shown to retreat” and that “perhaps there is little hope,” but reaffirmed that the Vatican intends to persist in efforts to contain climbing.

Days earlier, the cardinal had already classified as “absurd” the bombing of a hospital in Gaza, warning that the humanitarian crisis becomes “increasingly precarious.”
